Before I started hearing new songs off of Bitte Orca I had to admit that they held my attention, but I couldn’t say whether I really thought they were worthy of it. I like a certain amount of audience baiting and difficult listening, but it’s hard to defend those things as virtuous on their own. However, like their experimental brethren Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective (as Brendan noted in the Veckatimest post), they’ve decided that 2009 is the year to release their most accessible record yet.

We’ve already posted on a couple Bitte Orca tracks, but now you can go and hear the new album streaming in it’s entirety over at NPR. Even if it’s not your cup of tea, the record is worth your time.

What musical/visual transformer has been created?! As if fans of under-the-radar media could have picked a more odd or wonderful combination, director David Lynch has teamed with producer/musician Danger Mouse and Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse to create Dark Night of the Soul. The details: Linkous and DM wrote the songs and David Lynch took photos that will be compiled in an accompanying book for album’s release in July. Apparently, there will only be 5,000 copies, so if you’re thinking of hitting one of the festivals in your area, you may want to save some of your beer garden and t-shirt money.

NPR has the complete first listen via streaming and we’re pretty impressed thus far. As the title denotes, it’s dark, but your soul will likely rejoice at the list of collaborators. Check the tracklist:

1. “Revenge”- Flaming Lips
2. “Just War”- Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals
3. “Jaykub”- Jason Lytle
4. “Little Girl”- Julian Casablancas of the Strokes
5. “Angel’s Harp”- Frank Black of The Pixies/Grand Duchy
6. “Pain”- Iggy Pop
7. “Everytime I’m With You”- Jason Lytle
8. “Insane Lullaby”-James Mercer of The Shins
9. “The Man Who Played God”- Suzanne Vega
10. “Grim Augury”- Vic Chesnutt
11. “Dark Night of the Soul”- David Lynch and Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Gerbils

Twin Peaks Dream Midget Grooves to "Dark Night"

One of these is not like the other. Suzanne Vega? I still can’t hear her name without thinking of that Todd Barry joke. And, yes, it seems that Lynch really does sing. The tune is reminiscent of Thom Yorke’s “Eraser” album, and it ain’t half bad. You can just see a darkened stage with a spotlight and red curtains revealing…the dark night of your soul.

So what’s next? Quentin Tarantino and The Roots collab on a soul album?

“What More Can I Say” from Danger Mouse’s The Gray Album

This message brought to you by the procrastination of Will Thompson.

Some of us can’t be at South By Southwest. We don’t care. It really is not a big deal. We’re happy to stay here at home and just experience the festival vicariously. Perfectly happy. What? You can cry when you’re happy.

Perhaps the best resource for keeping up with SXSW activities is NPR. (Is that not a cool thing to say? Because it sounds not cool). Bob Boilen (pictured left) and his team do some great things to bring music to the people all year long, but they’ve really stepped it up for SXSW. They’ve been live-streaming and then archiving a number of great shows. If it’s not the next best thing to being there, it’s the next best thing we’ve found. Keep checking this post for updates as we post links to the highlights Also, feel free to post your own picks in the comments as you browse the site.
NPR’s All Songs Considered loves Laura Gibson (as do we). They’ve done one of their Tiny Desk Concerts with her, they chose a collaboration she did with The Portland Cello Project as Song of the Day back in January, she’s been featured on the podcast, and now they’ve selected the first track off of Beasts of Seasons as Song of the Day today. “Shadows on Parade” hints at noise and dissonance, but nothing overwhelms the deftness of the song. Listen there or here, after the jump.
