Bitte Orca Streaming at NPR

Dirty Projectors have caused me both external and internal debate. Before I started hearing new songs off of Bitte Orca I had to admit that they held my attention, but I couldn’t say whether I really thought they were worthy of it. I like a certain amount of audience baiting and difficult listening, but it’s hard to defend those things as virtuous on their own. However, like their experimental brethren Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective (as Brendan noted in the Veckatimest post), they’ve decided that 2009 is the year to release their most accessible record yet.

NPR @ SXSW

Some of us can’t be at South By Southwest. We don’t care. It really is not a big deal. We’re happy to stay here at home and just experience the festival vicariously. Perfectly happy. What? You can cry when you’re happy.
Perhaps the best resource for keeping up with SXSW activities is NPR. (Is that not a cool thing to say? Because it sounds not cool). Bob Boilen (pictured left) and his team do some great things to bring music to the people all year long, but they’ve really stepped it up for SXSW. They’ve been live-streaming and then archiving a number of great shows. If it’s not the next best thing to being there, it’s the next best thing we’ve found. NPR’s All Songs Considered loves Laura Gibson (as do we). They’ve done one of their Tiny Desk Concerts with her, they chose a collaboration she did with The Portland Cello Project as Song of the Day back in January, she’s been featured on the podcast, and now they’ve selected the first track off of Beasts of Seasons as Song of the Day today. “Shadows on Parade” hints at noise and dissonance, but nothing overwhelms the deftness of the song.
