Pickathon starts in a few days

Friday to Sunday, August 6th, 7th, and 8th, Pendarvis Farm, just outside of Portland, Oregon. If you’re at all in or near the Portland area, we aren’t aware of anything else you oughtta be doing that weekend. Discounted advance tickets remain on sale until Thursday the 5th. That’s tomorrow, people.

Pickathon, dammit.

A locally-owned, family-friendly, sustainably-run indie roots music festival with a killer lineup, great food, and on-site camping. Not only that, but Stereopathic mastermind Larson Hicks will be volunteering there, so if you see a relatively sober, 6’1″ Texan concierg-ing Bonnie Prince Billy from the Beer Garden to the stage, say hello to the man. Our dear friend Nate Wolff will be there, too.

We can’t say enough nice things about Pickathon, and those of us who aren’t making it down this year (some of us so we can run the Roadside Graves’ show this Friday) deeply resent those who are.

The Onion A/V Club Interviews Will Oldham

I don’t know that I’ve read a better interview with a music personality than this one. Oldham comes across as good-humored, balanced, and wise. I feel like the time spent reading an interview on the internet wasn’t wasted; an uncommon feeling. Check it out.

Richard Buckner: Ariel Ramirez

Richard Buckner’s cover for his 1998 record, Since, shows nine pictures of a candle flame blowing out. The record’s third song, Ariel Ramirez, is the sound of that candle wavering in the breeze, his baritone and guitar fighting against a pointless and paralyzing loss. Buckner’s lyrics suggest more than they tell; it’s almost the sound of them that’s more important than the words themselves. Put Ariel on/And smoke away the night/And do the white net crawl/Until the hammers fall. A piano joins Richard, first playing chords beneath the guitar, and then answering him at the end of each verse with an elusive flicker of the thing he’s pining for.

The song goes away as quickly as it arrives, like something glimpsed off the highway from the window of a bus.

Richard Buckner will be coming through town on April 28th, playing a set at Mikey’s at 8 PM with Sam Dickison opening. He’s touring in support of the digital re-issue of three fine records on Merge. Plan on being there.

New Record from Bonnie “Prince” Billy

Drag City Records releases Beware by Bonnie “Prince” Billy today, March 17th. He’s bringing this record out less than a year behind Lie Down In the Light, one of my favorite records of last year. All accounts indicate that this one’s even better. I’m hoping to have a copy to play on the show tomorrow night. Tune in at 8:30 pm Pacific on KUOI, 89.3 FM, Moscow, or online here.
