We’re getting closer to a Monday release. Believe me.

This episode we play tracks from Vampire Weekend, Grizzly Bear with Victoria Legrand, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Deep Dark Woods. We ignore the upcoming holiday, Halloween, not because it’s the Devil’s day, which it is, but because we disapprove of candy; not because it’s the Devil’s food of choice, which it is, but because to promote candy is to promote tooth decay and poor dental hygiene, which we value above all. At least I do. Larson might value something else above all. He does, in fact. I’ve tried to push him on the dental hygiene issue, and my points are sinking in, but slowly. It’s all about patience.

Special thanks to Jared Dunn, whose microphone contributed to the improved quality of sound you will enjoy on this episode.

So, Larson and I have taken our extensive radio training and decided to do something a little different. Instead of three hours, we’re trying to cram our signature banter and impeccable musical taste into about fifteen minutes. We’ve just made the first in a series of weekly podcasts. You’ll be able to get a hold of these on Mondays.

This week we’re playing through some of the tracks that have caught our attention over the past few weeks. You’ll hear songs from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Girls, Land of Talk, Neon Indian, Phosphorescent, and Bibio, and listen to me failing Larson and saying the words “live music” twice in a sentence with awkward emphasis.

Enjoy, and let us know what you think.

St. Vincent’s new album–Actor–is out today via 4AD. Annie Clark’s newest effort finds her trading in some of the dazzling sweetness and light that made her first effort–Marry Me–such a success. Actor shows off the same volume of sheer talent as its predecessor, but if Marry Me was as bright as day, then Actor is a dark little storm cloud. Example: third track, The Neigbors, begins with an airy melody but underneath the surface percussion booms like thunder. The song quickly moves from melodic order to fuzzy guitar chaos and back again. Miss Clark is not content with writing a straightforward pop song; she does all she can to undermine the lovely moments she creates. This is true of the entire record. The album is ordered around the idea that beneath the beautiful mask lurks darkness. (See album cover). Songs build up with lovely strings, woodwinds and vocals only to be destroyed by driving guitars and darker melodies. The way St. Vincent brings them all back together is what seperates her from many of her contemporaries. Hers is a world where darkness and light coexist, working together to bring shape and focus to the images and stories. MP3 for The Neighbors below. Go and buy Actor at a record store or online.

WOMEN recently stopped through humble Moscow, ID between shows in Salt Lake City and Spokane. The show was advertised for only two days but drew over 100 people to hear WOMEN play at the Nuart Theater alongside local bands The Oolongs and Yarn Owl.

Stereopathic was proud to bring them out, and enjoyed the chance to discuss the band’s influences and tour experiences on KUOI with Mike Siemens the next day. I’m not going to lie; the interview was a little awkward. But we had a jolly good time embracing the inherent weirdness of a radio interview with a relatively obscure band on a completely unknown radio station in a sleepy college town most folks don’t even know exists. Everyone had fun and we here at Stereopathic take our hats off to this fine group of young men.

Here’s the entire interview:
