Horse Feathers in the Green Room (and, returning to Pullman!)
Filed Under Awesome Music, Shows, Updates | 2 Comments
Portland, Oregon’s Horse Feathers have been out to Moscow a few times, most recently for last March’s Birds on a Wire Folk Festival. The second night of the Festival, they played a show at the BellTower that occasional Stereopathic contributor Josh Stevenson said pretty much justified to him the existence of live music. The BellTower, a former church, is a peerless venue for the detailed, introspective music that Horse Feathers plays. Its stone walls were made to amplify human voices and acoustic instruments; Justin Ringle and company found in the sanctuary a space that so perfectly served his songs it was almost like a fifth instrument.
You can get a sense of how well this band does at the Bell Tower from this Green Room Session, caught last March after their BOAW set. Horse Feathers performs Thistled Spring, the beautiful title track from their most recent record.

As you may have heard, Horse Feathers returns to the Bell Tower on December 7th.
Needless to say, we’re beyond pleased to have them back in Pullman. The band has three records’ worth of material to draw from, to say nothing of their various singles and minor releases—such as their new 7-inch cover of Nirvana’s “Drain You” backed with a new song called “Bonnet of Briars”. One Lesley Graves caught them performing the song at Portland’s Doug Fir Lounge; that’s it, right below.

Jónsi: live in concert video
Filed Under Updates | Leave a Comment
I’m not a big Jonsi
or Sigur Ros fan (although 3 tracks from Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust get pretty regular play on my iPod), but I guess Bob Boilen does, and that means something to me. NPR‘s sharing the live video of their Oct. 17th performance in LA (watch it here). Stereopathic’s sharing a couple of those Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust
tracks, and a Jonsi track, for good measure.
Enjoy.

So, periodically my job requires that I travel and rent a car. On those occasions, I like to check out what’s playing on XM radio – particularly Sirius XMU. It usually ends up being a good opportunity for me to check out some hot indie bands that I haven’t heard of yet, but I’m usually pretty tired of XMU by the time the trip is over. Unfortunately, like most of the radio we grew up with, XMU has a bad habit of repeating the same 10 songs over and over and over again until you end up never wanting to hear those songs again.
Anyways – here are some songs that I wouldn’t mind hearing again, in spite of XMU’s best efforts to ruin them for me:
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. – Simple Girl
I thought this song was totally rad and when I started looking for more music online, I was pleasantly surprised to find more good tunes. Here are a few other choice samples, all from their new Horse Power EP:
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. – Vocal Chords
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. – God Only Knows (Beach Boys cover)
I guess they perform in race car driver get-ups too:
Foster The People – Pumped Up Kicks
This one’s got the makings of a killer summer single (not sure if it came out this summer?). Either way, I’m sure it’ll end up on more than one summer mix-tape. I was bummed not to find any other music from them on the internets. From their website I gathered that Pumped Up Kicks
is the only song they’ve ever made or ever will make and they had a few shows in late September and early October with Fool’s Gold and School of Seven Bells.
Bonus Song & Video: Cloud Nothings – Hey Cool Kids
This song was interesting, but definitely not enough to merit the 30 times XMU repeated it in the few days of driving I did. However, the video for the song is worthwhile as a primer on overweight pop-and-locking. Enjoy:
