Josh Ritter – Change of Time
So Runs the World Away: Josh Ritter is living up to the promise that Paste Magazine made by naming him one of the top living song writers.  This time the customary combination of deep matter, love, and imaginative historical fiction from Ritter’s heartrendingly genuine pen are shored up by a surprising depth. The songs hold some beautiful lines that catch themselves in the branches of your mind.  The melodies, however, really carry us away. The collaboration of instrumental voices is always a strong point of the Ritter band. Here, the jamming, the cacophony, the folkotone of previous albums has matured to a subtle richness. The strings, for instance, the strings.  They rain through the waterfall of voice and musical jetsam with a sensitivity that is awe-inspiring. The tympani run deep like a Mississippi current. The perfect blend of voices and words in So Runs the World Away leaves me satisfied like good wine, all ears and on edge for Ritter’s debut as a novelist. Already, I can tell I’m going to cry. This album breaks my heart in a good way every time I turn it on.

i loved your review. i’m a long time JR fan… i grew up in moscow so related to him early on. despite his amazing friendliness in person this album has made me realize how above and beyond he has become… these songs are a tapestry that just keeps unfolding, i truly understand how he nearly imploded while creating it… i am on edge for his novel as well knowing this is what spawned it. i too was graced by this a bit early from doug as i’m hosting the listening party in tempe, az at hoodlums music… have fun with yours!
