MP3: Shearwater - “Castaways”

I’m a little overdue on these things, so I thought I’d do a Deluxe Edition w/extra stuff.

The first track from the new Shearwater record, The Golden Archipelago, dropped today over at Matador and it’s got me excited that this next album might live up to the expectations that Rook has left me with. Give it a listen and tell us what you think.

Fugazi is one of my favorite rock bands ever.

They’re the real deal all the way down to the bones. My friend Josh sent this over to me today. Basically - someone compiled banter from the stage from Fugazi. If listening to some revolutionaries of rock tell people to stop being idiots for 12 minutes, give it a listen!

My buddy, Jared, told me about Jack White’s new project this week, Dead Weather. The music’s right about what you’d expect another Jack White band to sound like. This video though, was unexpectedly cool, particularly for this wanna-be gun aficionado and Jack’s drumming is way better than I would’ve expected. (It was incredibly timely that Jared told me to watch this video during Thanksgiving break, because I happened to spend roughly 100 hours researching the merits of AR15’s vs AK47s and those happen to be the two weapons featured in this video).

As I’ve said before - Blakroc is just cool. Musically it’s fun and interesting, but mostly, it’s just cool. Watching these behind-the-scenes videos of Dan Auerbach working with rappers is just cool. Sorry I can’t be more descriptive here. Check it out though - you’ll agree.
Here’s Blakroc Webisode 11:

And to wrap things up: even though they’re standing us up on Friday night - I can’t deny that I like Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

So - when their label sent this over today, I had to give it a watch. If you enjoyed the first installment of SALVO! - their 12 part drug-induced series of videos, then you’ll love this one. Whereas the first one, for Desert Song, was pretty low-fi, this most recent video for Kisses Over Babylon, was pretty high quality and cinematic. Warning there is a brief NSFW spot.

That Shearwater album is going to be amazing. It amuses me that the band started out as an outlet for Will Sheff and Jonathan Meiburg to play quiet songs that didn’t fit the Okkervil mode. Now every time I hear that band somehow the sound has gotten bigger. Count me in. Also, you should listen to the new Vic Chesnutt album; Guy from Fugazi is in his band and did the arrangements.
