Concert Update: Local Natives to play Pullman without Edward Sharpe or Fool’s Gold
Filed Under Updates | 2 Comments
MP3: Airplanes - Local Natives
MP3: Wild Eyes - Local Natives
Due to several members of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros recovering from colds, and the toll said colds have taken on Alex’s voice, they’ve had to cancel their performance in Pullman, WA. Fool’s Gold followed suit. However, Local Natives will still be playing at the BellTower on Friday, Dec. 4th.
Also - Pullman’s Buffalo Death Beam have moved their record release party/concert to the BellTower on Dec. 4th and will be opening for the Local Natives.
If you’ve purchased a ticket to the show, you’ll be getting an email about your refund options very soon.
Tickets to the show are now $8. Stay tuned to learn more about Local Natives. For now, check out what Paste Magazine has to say about theim and give the music a listen on their myspace.

MP3: Willowz - “Repetition”
MP3: Willowz - “Everyone”
“I think as far as the songs go, they’re the best songs we’ve ever written—I think it’s our best record in all ways,” asserts frontman Richie Follin in regard to Everyone, the latest offering from his band, The Willowz. Having been an attentive fan through the last eight years, I would have to agree. That The Willowz were having their almost impromptu record release party at a NY dive called Home Sweet Home is probably just a coincidence, but all the same, I couldn’t let the irony go unnoticed. The Willowz, who have always Read more

MP3: Dirty Projectors - “Cannibal Resource”
MP3: Vampire Weekend - “Horchata”

The Dirty Projectors are streaming a track from their forthcoming Temecula Sunrise EP. If you loved Bitte Orca even a tenth as much as I did, or P4k did (to give you a hint at how much I liked that album, know that I used 9 of my carefully guarded Lala free song credits on that album) - then this will be right up your alley. For her first ever performance in Seattle, cellist Alison Chesley, who performs under the name Helen Money, certainly deserved better than she got. Her set of experimental solo cello playing augmented and amplified by an array of effects pedals was shoehorned into a bill featuring hardcore rock acts, and her quieter moments were in constant threat of being drowned out by the unrelenting house music bleeding through the walls from the club next door.
The effects of all of these factors had an obvious effect on Chesley, who cut her set to a serviceable but woefully short 20 minutes. But during this abbreviated performance, she was able to stunningly bring to bear the many facets of her solo material. There was the elongated, almost jazz-y pieces that echoed the exploratory work of the Sun Ra and his Astro Infinity Orchestra album Strange Strings alongside some more aggressive and noisy pieces that used her mass of effects pedals, some of which looped in prerecorded sounds or helped to add meaty fuzz to her cello lines.
What frustration Chesley vocalized and exhibited in her furrowed brow was channeled right into her playing. She plucked at the strings with her fingers, used them percussively by hitting them with her bow, and eked out any number of raw tones and squelches. The tense feeling also added an extra bit of drive to her instrumental take on the Minutemen classic, “Political Song For Michael Jackson To Sing”. Over a clattering, driving drum beat, Chesley scratched out D. Boon’s vocal melody on her cello, losing none of the grit and pent up distress in the translation. It was a breathtaking cover that felt heavier than anything the other bands on the bill attempted that evening.

Why Hello, Owl City: TAKE TWO
Filed Under Updates | 5 Comments
Hello, again. The unexpected hostility and general negativity as well as the quite predictable snobbery that I have heard directed towards Owl City from ignorant and cynical Gen X singles and their publishers has convicted and convinced me that perhaps I should have interpreted my conversation with Adam Young a bit more for the general public.
So Owl City stirs together a sound yummy enough to make the maddening crowd bounce off the walls: you might expect that Grim Eaters are going to sniff, and necessarily, hipsters are bound to squirm while they wait it out to see whether it’s more damnable to love him or leave him. N.B. Owl City isn’t called Postal Service, Jr.; Adam Young isn’t Incredi-Boy or Michael Cera hooking a date by dork-appeal. Believe it or not, dork-appeal just isn’t that appealing. N.B. Please, whether you are on first-name terms with Ben and Zoe or not, watch your language.
That said, Why Hello, Owl City: TAKE TWO. Is that allowed?
“Meet Adam Young, the 23 year old front-man of a global sensation. Sporting a respectfully black suit, he skips to the front of the stage – yes, he does – and waves awkwardly while tweeny-bopping Read more

When I found out that Mount Eerie’s performance would only consist of songs from their latest album Wind’s Poem, I was bummed. Although I enjoyed the new record, there were songs on their earlier albums I definitely wanted to hear live. I figured the performance would be well done, but lacking in that I wouldn’t know the songs well enough to get into them. But my fears were for naught. Early in the evening the live show overwhelmingly convinced me of the new songs.
The band’s show at the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia was one of the best I’ve seen all year, in a year that included shows from Grizzly Bear Read more

Larson’s List (of things worth checking out)

MP3: Postal Service - “Such Great Heights”
MP3: Owl City - “Fireflies”

So - I was following the buzz about Sufjan today and ended up on Paste’s 50 Best Albums of the Decade. I’ve got to say that I thought this was a pretty excellent list. There were a few that I thought out of place (how can Avett Bro’s newest make it on the top 50 of the decade when it hasn’t been out for more than a few months? Typical case of early stage enfatuation that’ll wear off soon and the writer will regret not putting Grizzly Bear or Department of Eagles on there). But seriously, this was a quality, unpretentious list of the decade’s best. Special Larson Kudos to Paste for including Ryan Adams’ “Heartbreaker,” Beck’s “Sea Change,” National’s “Boxer,” and Pedro the Lion’s “Control.” Read more
