Kansas Live

Kansas is out on their 35th anniversary tour. Kansas has also never broken up. They had some substantial personnel changes in the 80s, sure, but the current line-up boasts three original members and the “new guys” have been with them for 20+ years. So, Larson and I have taken our extensive radio training and decided to do something a little different. Instead of three hours, we’re trying to cram our signature banter and impeccable musical taste into about fifteen minutes. We’ve just made the first in a series of weekly podcasts. Mt St Helens Vietnam Band, from Seattle, are on the Dead Oceans record label along with other awesome peeps that you love like Phosphorescent, Dirty Projectors, Akron/Family, John Vanderslice, and Bishop Allen. They have also done a session at Daytrotter if you are so inclined to have a listen. Some other things to know about MSHVB are that they are totally rad, they have a killer 13-yr old drummer, and they are playing in Spokane on Saturday night (and you need to go). I speak from experience since I just saw them recently when they opened for Japandroids, my fave new band, here in NYC a week and a half ago. It is definitely in the post-punk vein, with jostling rhythm changes, punchy riffs, and bizarre bell-stilt tambourines. It’s pretty potent stuff. I would advise removing your socks upon entering before MSHVB rocks them off for you. Enjoy.

I’ve been mulling this over for some time, but never has it been more timely than this week. On Friday, I’ll watch 70′s prog rock giants Kansas. Not only that, but up until a few years ago, reunion tours were viewed only as cash grabs for bands long past their prime. Read more
