Run Rabbit Run

Quite a few things are a rumblin’ in the Sufjan household. After two years of moderate silence post the eruption to fame that was Sufjan Stevens and his states albums it seems that Sufjan is giving everyone a bit more to chew on until the next state album (fingers crossed!) is released.
Run Rabbit Run, out October 6, 2009, is not purely a Stevens creation. It’s a reworking of Sufjan’s Philip Glass-esque 2001 album Enjoy Your Rabbit. A record that blipped and bleeped and was so electronic it pushed your utilities bill up into the high $100’s for the next month.
Sufjan seems to be more of a overseer the second time around though, letting quite a few young composers( Michael Atkinson, Rob Moose, Nico Muhly, among others) overhaul his Read more

Not music related, but these are two of the guys behind Stella!, The State, Wet Hot American Summer, and a respectable portion of what’s been funny in the past decade or so. Support their show and prove that the US likes real comedy.

What a beautiful giraffe.

Scuby walks up and down the street. He sees a man in the uniform of a shopkeeper. Oh, he thinks, a shopkeeper. I’ll ask him. He approaches the shopkeeper. The shopkeeper looks disapprovingly at his attire, red overalls and a shirt complementing the inebriating attributes of tequila. Shoes made of raccoon pelt. Oh, Scuby thinks, small minds in small towns. Golf-club wielding idiots. Not used to true individuals such as myself. That’s a clue. He greets the shopkeeper with a maximum of joviality but the shopkeeper wears an expression like a frog pelt (a frog pelt being a thing Scuby has witnessed).

“Sir, I’d like to ask a question if I may.” The shopkeeper, sitting on a bench in front of his shop does not move but follows Scuby’s jutting Read more

I am my beloved's.

Now, listen carefully, because it’s true that I have a couple of demands. That sounds so strong doesn’t it? Demands. So demanding, yeah? I get the feeling that you guys know what I mean, so we’ll leave it there. But, first of all, I just want to be sure that everyone’s extra comfortable. Is it so? Excellent. We’ve also provided each of you with a gift bag. Some goodies. No peeking! Seriously, don’t peek, Twenty-Six. I’ll keep it. I don’t have to give you anything, Twenty-Six.

So, demands . . . I know! How about this weather? Raining without ceasing. And so cloudy. Freezing rain sometimes. But here we are. Here you are. Don’t feel Read more

Song was written by Paul Simon. These guys sold a great quantity of records.

I’m a little soft. I don’t do this kind of work as well as I ought, but we do get a lot of sad cases come through, sometimes individuals without a lot of money. Why do they come here? I really do not know. I couldn’t begin to guess. This place is supposed to be fun, right? But a lot of times I think they’ve got memories of some little vixen broke their heart, better times maybe. And so they come here and they walk around and they mope.

But this one, short guy, black hair, one of them turtleneck sweaters, walks up and just stands here a bit. The ride I was on is called “The Circle” and it basically just whips you around in a circle for two minutes and lets you off. It’s a centrifuge for Read more

My dog poops solid gold.

Oedipus lets his father live, lets the chariot pass with only a minor quibble, but smacks him firmly on the ass.

Put down your pail, let it go, kid. Home is where the heart is. The wilderness, that’s where God is. Just kidding. Moses thought that. Oh, he was right, and look where that got us, the Hebrews.

Watch it. Finn, you’ve had enough. Go home. Fine. Hand me that last load. Finnegan! Saints. Is he okay? After that fall? I don’t suppose so. God rest him.

4987_94292254395_506354395_1761552_4743702_n1It has not been much of a Lovin’ Spoonful ‘Summer in the City’ here in New York these past couple of months, but when I got out from work a few Fridays ago, the rain had retreated and the sun had finally come. The line wasn’t too long at the time of my arrival, but as the weather held up and the minutes passed by, it became increasingly obvious that the first free Central Park Summerstage show of the season would be a very well attended event. And it wasn’t only New York-area attendees who were there, either. Read more

FRAGMENTS.

A: I remember the enormous carnival. I worried about shooters. You took me to shoot little metal pans and do some shots, and get my mind off of things. I did not want so much gin and I did not want any cigarettes. I probably had six ounces of your Seagram’s gin and three cigarettes.

B: I can’t believe we trust our children to these carnies.

C: My grandparents once let me ride this ridiculous Read more

afro-punk-afro-punkJanelle Monae is totally. freaking. awesome. If Diana Ross, Lauryn Hill, and Tina Turner were potatoes, Janelle Monae would be mashed potatoes (and not just because her guitarist looks just like Ike). With the style of a sleek and sophisticated ’40’s era bombshell, she looks like she means business–and that’s because she does. Although I was only able to catch the last two songs of her set, the strong and street-wise vocals she belted out along with her soulful 60’s girl-group stage presence had me cussin’ and cryin’ I hadn’t left work earlier. The music was funky Read more

I don't know how I feel about this street.

“The Palmolive Yew Rave” offered young people the chance to become more familiar with the company’s products in a casual environment surrounded by like-minded peers. They’d looked into it and it appeared that their target demographic had continued to age and, against the expectations of some of the more optimistic folks in the marketing department, would someday go the way of all flesh. This realization produced a sudden fluster of concern in the hearts of the company executives. “Everything seemed to be going so well,” said Lester, the company’s Chief Creative Officer. “Success is a fleeting prize, like a bird hidden in a bush.”

But eventually the company hit upon the idea that Read more
