You are to have—ease it —an open hand while you pray.
Say, tell it, speak like it’s for a free pass.
A condemned man, you have to kill the rule.
You have to keep down at mind.
If you have to have me,
break the first born friend
till it pass over me, Read more

New College, Oxford, is of rather late foundations, hence the name. It was founded around the late 14th century. It has, like other colleges, a great dining hall with big oak beams across the top, yes? These might be two feet square, forty-five feet long.
A century ago, so I am told, some busy entomologist, went up into the roof of the dining Read more

When I was seventeen Mary and I went to the fairgrounds looking for the carnie bones Jimmy Ploutz told us about. As we walked she put her arm around my shoulder, and I put my hand in the back pocket of her jeans, in the manner of a drunk couple I once saw dancing to a Springsteen tribute band, who also taught me that drunkeness and love respect no censors.
We found the booth immediately, buried under a pile of greasy popcorn bags and Read more

Bianca cannot get married until Kate gets married. Kate is not a happy camper, primarily due to activities like cooking over fires and not taking showers. Their father loves camping more than even arbitrary and dramatically pregnant rules. Let’s camp this weekend, their father says, I feel I need it. The girls feel they do not need it. But they are oddly compelled to obey their father’s wishes.
Lionkiller is at home with this environment. He views Kate as Read more

Claudette Gable looked in the refrigerator for the aloe. She bent down and moved condiments in the door. Her hand on the mustard, she seized slightly and emitted a low groan. She thrust her hand under the back of her shirt and scratched. She righted herself, groaned again. In the bathroom she lifted her shirt and twisted to look at the redness of her back, which had an unnatural glow that she imagined resembled the sweet and sour sauce at a Chinese restaurant. She decided not to scratch. She would just let the itchiness go.
The scratching didn’t help. Drinking water and applying aloe were the only things that helped. Otherwise it burned, and it actually burned. Her back burned as though she were a Read more

One night, just after we were engaged, we tried to learn the foxtrot from a book we got from the library. She does not read directions particularly well. I still help her with knitting directions. Unfortunately, I don’t read directions particularly well either. It doesn’t help that Read more

I’m the boy that dropped that box of pins. I’m the boy that wakes up at 2:00 and 4:00 and 6:00. I’m the boy with an expression of honest surprise on my face, even when my surprise is dishonest. I am the boy whose demise is imminent.
I’m the boy that looked blankly at the floor covered in pins and pricked every finger in the process of picking them up. I’m the boy that nudged you at 2:01 and put my arm across you at 4:02 and kept the light on for only as long as it took to gather my clothes for the shower at 6:04. I’m the boy who tried to plaster up his face with a look of surprise even though I knew days before you tried that you would. I am the boy whose innocence and body are both corruptible.
I’m the boy with each finger bandaged with those spot bandages that Read more

[The first minute of the track is nonsense, after which there is a proper song. Don’t be discouraged, skip ahead.]
That morning we found it hot and muggy inside, but walked out the door into a cool morning. We returned inside for sweaters. We remarked about the way that a good rain cools off, and that last night, coming back to the car from the restaurant, the pavement still hadn’t cooled and radiated a vapor up at us. We walked down to the river, along the path filled with rough rock and green tree light and animal excrement. Mostly animal excrement.
You sat forward in the bow. You being a whisp, I ascended the Read more
