Dark Night of the Soul

What musical/visual transformer has been created?! As if fans of under-the-radar media could have picked a more odd or wonderful combination, director David Lynch has teamed with producer/musician Danger Mouse and Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse to create Dark Night of the Soul. The details: Linkous and DM wrote the songs and David Lynch took photos that will be compiled in an accompanying book for album’s release in July. Apparently, there will only be 5,000 copies, so if you’re thinking of hitting one of the festivals in your area, you may want to save some of your beer garden and t-shirt money.

NPR has the complete first listen via streaming and we’re pretty impressed thus far. As the title denotes, it’s dark, but your soul will likely rejoice at the list of collaborators. Check the tracklist:

1. “Revenge”- Flaming Lips
2. “Just War”- Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals
3. “Jaykub”- Jason Lytle
4. “Little Girl”- Julian Casablancas of the Strokes
5. “Angel’s Harp”- Frank Black of The Pixies/Grand Duchy
6. “Pain”- Iggy Pop
7. “Everytime I’m With You”- Jason Lytle
8. “Insane Lullaby”-James Mercer of The Shins
9. “The Man Who Played God”- Suzanne Vega
10. “Grim Augury”- Vic Chesnutt
11. “Dark Night of the Soul”- David Lynch and Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Gerbils

One of these is not like the other. Suzanne Vega? I still can’t hear her name without thinking of that Todd Barry joke. And, yes, it seems that Lynch really does sing. The tune is reminiscent of Thom Yorke’s “Eraser” album, and it ain’t half bad. You can just see a darkened stage with a spotlight and red curtains revealing…the dark night of your soul.

So what’s next? Quentin Tarantino and The Roots collab on a soul album?
