Desolation Wilderness
Filed Under Featured | Leave a Comment
The sound of Desolation Wilderness is a collage of punk-rock ethic and dream pop sound layered between postcards and pictures of uncertain date. Free your mind of desolation and forget about wilderness, unless your idea of wilderness connotes a happily ambivalent vagabond. The music of this Olympia, Washington band is a beachy-keen flash of dreamy ambient-pop that’s a little retro and more than a little happy-go-lucky. The sound of Desolation Wilderness echoes back like Read more

Veckatimest

It’s streaming (sorry, not no more as of 6/1) on Grizzly Bear’s myspace. After you listen, go buy it.
As with Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavillion, it is absolutely exhilarating to hear a creative and ambitious band tether its experimental tendencies to the concise demands of the four-minute pop song.

Why I Must Be Careful
Filed Under Updates | Leave a Comment
The hardcore Balkan frenzy of Why I Must Be Careful is careening across the northwest from the band’s Portland home;last February, I caught it alighting on the Fontee Fest. The room exploded with the electric thunder of Seth Brown’s Rhodes piano and John Niekrasz’ drums. The instrumentals led directly to the band’s staccato recitations of backward verse and upside down lyric and back to the Tasmanian whirl – Brown cycling the keys almost spherically and Niekrasz allotting each drum exactly the correct proportion of power complete the statement and perfect the experience. The concert? Why I Must Be Careful is an experience, not a show. Although your ears might be ringing Read more

By now, you’ve probably heard that, due to problems with EMI, David Lynch’s/Danger Mouse’s/Mark Linkous’s Dark Night of the Soul has no physical release date. We’re quite sad, it’s true, but if you look below, there will be a little treat to cheer you up. Read more

mewithoutYou “it’s all crazy!” Review
Filed Under Updates | Leave a Comment
From their inception, mewithoutYou has been a perplexing and often rewarding animal. Though their first album, [A-->B] Life, bore the markings of post-hardcore, Aaron Weiss’s narration/stream of consciousness vocal style and claustrophobic guitars set them apart from the burgeoning emo scene. Their uniqueness was fully formed on the band’s sophomore album, Catch for Us the Foxes. Weiss and company dropped the posturing of their previous genre and formed something intense, introspective, and certainly their own. Read more

Paulie Pesh- Opportunities EP
Filed Under Updates | Leave a Comment

To start, I feel weird reviewing Paulie Pesh’s new Opportunities EP. I listen to many genres, but acoustic pop isn’t my usual bag. I usually dig the indie. You know. The “hipster” stuff. Pesh’s MySpace bio reads “Paulie’s music is “distinct and thought provoking, inspiring movement within and beyond the rhythm of the beat.”
This instantly makes me skeptical, of course. I’m used to hyphenated, genre-bending comparisons in the bands I check out. Read more

The place Edward always took his son was enclosed from every angle by trees. Time had stacked rock on rock and moss gilded and glorified an altar-shaped pile. Water ran from under a tall rock face into a pool and a forever-decaying evergreen sprouted mushrooms. In a warmer climate you could almost live there. Branches hung down like curtains.
Edward first brought his son out a few weeks after the Read more
