The fellas in Low Red Land don’t always just rock, they have day jobs too, like cutting glass, bartending and smoking BBQ. We sat down with them and got the low-down on some band history.

Stereopathic: Where does the name Low Red Land come from?
Low Red Land: It comes from a documentary about outlaw country music from the 1970’s, it’s called “Heartworn Highways” and there’s an obscure country artist, called Read more

What is new?
Filed Under Updates | 8 Comments
Every time this happens I worry that it’s the end. That I will stop listening to new music and stop understanding what the kids are talking about. The buzziest bands at the moment aren’t really doing anything for me. However, it’s more than likely that I’m just in crotchety mode and I’ll snap out of it in a month and strike forehead with palm.
So, here’s what everyone else is talking about: Read more

Song in Plaster: M. Ward “Hi-Fi”
Filed Under Updates | 4 Comments
Your heart actually beats, something you might have forgotten after hearing it a thousand times in the songs. It does it by itself, most of the time for years and years. Put something on repeat and your beating heart strains to catch the rhythm and match it. It lifts, it falls, prepares every moment for that final fall and the last lift.
Sometimes two chords are enough. Sometimes you ought to settle. Sometimes two chords make Read more

Drawn Songs #1
Filed Under Updates | 11 Comments
This post marks the first in a series from a visual contributor, Nate Stevenson. He listens to music, picks a song that he finds visually evocative and then illustrates the song. We’re used to writing about music. What about drawing about music?
This being the first in the series, we’re still working some things out. The first image here maintains the composition pretty well, but plays loose with the sharpness. If you want a sharper image follow the ‘read more’ link. You can click both of the images to view them larger.

Also, the name of the song? If you haven’t guessed it, read on: Read more

New Color, New Reggae: Look out for Motorbikes, or, Paul Adam Benson
Filed Under Updates | Leave a Comment

The artistic travels of Motorbikes, according to Nicholas Wilbur, was possibly inspired by pizza. Wilbur, close friend and associate of Paul Adam Benson, the artist behind the music of Motorbikes, shared the history with me. Benson and Wilbur were best buds growing up in Mountain Home, Arkansas, a ramshackle little town in the Ozarks. After high school and rolling through a few ups and downs, their plan originally was to move to Springfield, MO, get a house, and build a brick oven.Wilbur explained that, “when it was snowing outside, we could go outside and make pizzas in our brick oven. Then we rented a house, and it wasn’t allowed to have a brick oven.
Plan Two seems to be working out just dandy. Benson, now migrated to Anacortes, WA, Read more

Taking what we know.

8-bit… ah… well what can you say? Most of the junk out there just sounds like it could be straight from an old NES game, but some have managed to tame the stereotypical arpeggios and actually create music that a matured listener, which I am assuming we all are, will appreciate. Sure it’s catchy, sure it’s a bit more square wave than Read more

Laura Gibson very kindly risked carsickness and the bleary-eyed, sleepless rigors of living in a tour vehicle while en route to a several-show stint at SXSW to answer some questions we posed to her in anticipation of her upcoming show here this Friday. Laura, touring in support of her much-beloved by Stereopathic record, Beasts of Seasons, alights upon Moscow alongside Seattle’s Pablo Trucker and Troubletown (also known as Jenna Conrad). An elegant and deliberate record, Beasts of Seasons piqued our curiosity not just about Laura’s songwriting and recording processes, but also about the Read more

NPR @ SXSW
Filed Under Updates | Leave a Comment

Some of us can’t be at South By Southwest. We don’t care. It really is not a big deal. We’re happy to stay here at home and just experience the festival vicariously. Perfectly happy. What? You can cry when you’re happy.
Perhaps the best resource for keeping up with SXSW activities is NPR. (Is that not a cool thing to say? Because it sounds not cool). Bob Boilen (pictured left) and his team do some great things to bring music to the people all year long, but they’ve really stepped it up for SXSW. They’ve been live-streaming and then archiving a number of great shows. If it’s not the next best thing to being there, it’s the next best thing we’ve found. Keep checking this post for updates as we post links to the highlights Also, feel free to post your own picks in the comments as you browse the site. Read more
